Jenny Weaver’s Answer

It depends on your interests in theatre. Are you a straight actor? Only doing plays like Neil Simon or Shakespeare. Do you like musicals? Are you a triple treat? (Singer, dancer, actor) Do you like to build sets? Hang lights? Work on sound? Are you a house manager? You have to figure out what you like to do and look into the schools you are interested in and see if they have classes like that.

Jenny Weaver recommends the following next steps:

Figure out is schools have classes you want to see.

Jordan C.’s Answer

I’d say watch tons of films and do as many auditions and small projects that you can find in your community and around the country. Google is your best friend. Now that I’ve said that, humor me a little. I totally get how you feel. My best advice is to study and train in the classics. Any theater educational and training will only help to prepare you for the big screen. I have friends now that do film and they would all agree I’m sure. You can’t beat learning the fundamentals. Once you get a good handle on those, the world is yours for the taking! Artists in any industry respect when artists know their stuff. Plus I’ve always been told by all of my teachers that technique and education are there to give you a foundation so that you can explore your own artistry and become whatever kind of artist you want to be. There’s a reason that we have great examples to learn from, to be greater than them, but we have tos study and understand where they came from and how they got to where they are. Patience and hard work, as annoying as that can sound sometimes, truly are the greatest tools in your toolbox.

Jordan C. recommends the following next steps:

Google programs/projects/auditions locally and nationally that you can be involved in. Be open to all experiences big and small. Focus on the moment and not the larger goal all the time.
Show up and do the work! Breathe also, trust that each time you do something, even if you don’t see or notice your growth, you are growing!
If you can’t find what you are looking for, start something yourself! Get your friend together, find some film students at a local school or college and brainstorm ideas and projects. Get the camera rolling and get behind it.
Trust the process!!!!!!!!
Trust yourself!!!!
