How do I stop procrastinating?

I try to peave my house and go somewhere else, for instance go to my college campus. But I will still slack off and go on my phone. #student

Hi Isaac! Good question! I feel like this has been something that everyone has struggled with and it is a bit of trial and error to find what works best for you. For me, my procrastination came from a sense of feeling overwhelmed, there was too much to do and I didn't even know how to start it all so I would put it off. What I found that worked best for me was breaking down tasks into little pieces that seemed more manageable.

So for example if I had an essay due in a week I would spend Monday collecting/reviewing my notes and getting my thoughts in order, Tuesday I would come up with my thesis and a rough overview of my arguments and ideas. The next day I would write an intro and the next a few paragraphs and so on and so forth. For me this made things seem more manageable and gave me a set task to accomplish and an end.

I also felt as if I couldn't look at any one thing too long without losing focus. If you break down each assignment into smaller pieces you can rotate between them so you are looking at something new that catches your attention each time you feel bored.

And don't feel like you can't take a break! Sometimes even a quick lap around the library is enough to get you focused and energized again.

Hope this helps!

Katie recommends the following next steps:

Find a calendar (print one from online, get a planner, google calendar, etc)
Read the assignment and look for ways to break down the assignment into smaller pieces
Assign each piece of the project/essay/problem set a day of the week up until the due date

Maybe write out a list of things you want to achieve and once you have achieved the goal mark it off. Overall hopefully it will teach you to stay motivated and be in the moment. I would also explore some ways for yourself to stay motivated and be in the moment with what you are doing. Also challenging urself with not being distracted and trying to be in an environment where you don't become distracted so easily. So hopefully you will stay motivated and completed the goals/tasks you want todo! :) Good luck!
