I am thinking of becoming an Accounting Major. I like to be active and conversational around people. Are accountants like this?
I love to be around and interact with people and I am concerned that accountants are stuck to the computer all day. Is this true?

Hi Michael! Great question. I work at an Accounting firm and there are many different types of people that are Accounting majors. Some of my colleagues focus on auditing and compliance, which can include reviewing data on the computer. However, myself and other colleagues focus more on the consulting side of accounting. This allows us to be out of the office and spending time with our clients. In my experience, I have spent a lot of time with clients and don't often feel like an "accounting major" but more of a consultant. Also, a lot of the accounting firms are focusing on technology these days. The goal is to leverage technology to complete the computer based tasks, so that the employees can focus on other more "value add" work. Accounting majors can perform a variety of different jobs, so if it is something you are interested in - definitely keep researching and look for different types of jobs and opportunities available for accounting majors! Good luck!

I think you should examine why you want to be an Accounting Major first. If you truly love crunching numbers and the order you will find in that world, I think you can find a way to balance both your passion for Accounting and your passion for people. You probably have to find ways to divide your time between the two but you can make it work.
