What specific careers can English majors go into?
I plan to major in English/Writing. I wish to have writing as a major part of my career and was wondering how many different careers fit that description. #career-plan

I majored in Philosophy, not English, but I believe there is a measure of correlation between the 2. People would ask me what I would "do with that" (meaning my degree), and I would respond, "anything I want" (meaning literal anything I wanted). The point is I don't go around philosophizing as part of my job. But I employ aspects of what I studied to developing plans, construction of arguments, and communicating complex ideas.
As Ken says, you should reflect on what you mean when you say you want to write. What kinds of communications are you looking to have? A Stenographer does a lot of writing, but I wouldn't call it creative. Any large business, government, or civic organization is going to require communicators. Can you find satisfaction in emails? Do you want to put out newsletters, news releases, or promotions?
I think you should start with what you want to do and figure out how writing can tie into that, and see how you feel about that.
Best wishes,

The applications of an English major are very broad, so it is very important to get to know yourself better to learn how you personality traits relate to people who are successful in this broad field and then talk to people who are doing what you think that you might want to do, so that you can see what they do, how they got there, and what advice and suggestions that they might have for you.
Getting to know yourself and how your personality traits relate to people involved in various career opportunities is very important in your decision making process. During my many years in Human Resources and College Recruiting, I ran across too many students who had skipped this very important step and ended up in a job situation which for which they were not well suited. Selecting a career area is like buying a pair of shoes. First you have to be properly fitted for the correct size, and then you need to try on and walk in the various shoe options to determine which is fits the best and is most comfortable for you to wear. Following are some important steps which I developed during my career which have been helpful to many .
