What subjects should I focus on most?

Hi Josie - I'm not sure what grade you are currently in so my response will be framed around high school.  I have 2 sons, one graduated from Harvard University in 2013 and the other is a Sophomore at Stanford University (class of 2021).   I would recommend that you make sure you are taking the most challenging Math and Science courses that your school offers, but in addition, take the most challenging curriculum overall the school offers.  Most colleges, even MIT, are not necessarily looking for students who excel in a specific area, but they also want to see students who are well-rounded academically and who have taken the most strenuous classes offered in the school (and done well in them).  My sons both took as many AP classes as their schedules allowed starting as early Freshman year with Pre-AP classes.  For MIT, perhaps focusing your extra-curricular activities around science/math/engineering would also be helpful.  If any of these involve student-run groups, find a leadership role in them and take it on.  My sons were both members of their Math and Scholar's Bowl teams.  They held leadership positions in honor societies and on Scholar's Bowl.  Lastly, they were heavily involved in their community through service leadership so don't forget that other activities outside of school are also important.  Best of luck in your pursuit and I hope to hear that you are accepted to MIT one day!

Hi Josie! One piece of advice I would give that is indirectly related to your question, is try and talk to people in the field you are interested in. You could ask teachers or maybe even parents of your friends or family that might know someone in the field. Sometimes we have expectations on what a certain career will be, but if you are interested in something, my advice would be to get some specific insights from someone in the field. From my perspective, it's always great to get a great overall education, especially just being in 7th grade. Science, math, and english. And of course, make sure you are challenging yourself - so I would definitely agree with taking AP classes in those subjects that really appeal to you, and that will come over time. Extra curricular activities are also a great source of gaining experience and knowledge in subjects outside of your normal classes, and connecting with people you might not otherwise. Best of luck!!
