With the school I'm looking at, it would be very difficult to hold a typical job while in college. Are there "different" types of jobs that someone can recommend that are flexible? Thank you!

Sheila’s Answer

Hello Paige, I also worked while in college. Here are some examples of jobs that I did that were very flexible.

  1. Working as an interpreter, great if you speak another language. I got paid $35/hr and worked on my own schedule. I worked as a Haitian Creole interpreter for federal asylum cases. You'll need to get certified to prove your language skills.
  2. Work on campus. This offered flexibility but the pay was lower. I got paid hourly ($12/hr) working in the chemistry lab and only worked in between classes.
  3. Do online freelance work. There are great websites like upwork.com where you can find and bid on jobs that pay either by the hour or by the job. Choose an area where you have a skills (writing, editing, voice over..there is sooo much to choose from) then market your skills. In 2013 alone I made $10,000 on freelance work online and this was done 100% on my own time.

Sarah’s Answer

Hi Paige, When I was in college I got a job at the front desk of a local hotel. Being a 24 hour establishment they were very flexible with my ever-changing schedule each semester. I was also able to study at work towards the end of the shift each night because foot traffic was light. I highly recommend it for a college student.

Pamela’s Answer

Hi Jordan,

Most colleges have Work Study programs. These programs are specifically designed for students. Contact the school's Career Services office. They may also have leads on some part time jobs that are available.

Shannon’s Answer

Hi Jordan,

When I was in school I was able to secure a job in my college career guidance office.  I was paid and was able to work around my class schedule.   I would ask your school if they have student jobs available.

Shannon recommends the following next steps:

Inquire if your school has student jobs and how to apply for them
