what is the best major for medical school?

What should I declare as my undergrad major to enter medical school? Some good schools do not have pre-med as an undergrad major. #majors #school #medical-school #professional #medical-school #major

Hi Amber,

Pre-med is not considered a college major for medical schools. It is more of a classification of classes that are geared towards medical school. Any major you choose is acceptable for medical schools. What medical schools want to see in their students is the diversity of your interests, strengths and skills. Liberal Arts students are accepted into medical school just as much as the Physical and Biological Science majors. Volunteer experience and community involvement is also an important consideration when you apply to med school. You can look up the state's Labor of Statistics on popular pre-med majors as well: https://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2017/article/premed.htm. If you'd like something to read up on preparing for medical school there is "How to be Pre-Med: a Harvard MD's Medical School Preparation Guide for Students and Parents" by Suzanne M. Miller.

Honestly, the major you pursue in Undergraduate should be in line with the requirements of Medical Schools, which should be covered by most Science majors. I majored in Biology before taking my MCAT, but plenty of my friends were Physics and Chemistry majors who took the MCAT. Just be sure whatever major you select, it will meet the requirements or be ready to enroll in additional courses outside of your major to meet the requirements.
