My advise will be get involved in groups that catch your interest. It can be difficult if you don't have a good circle of friends. Also stay active by walking or any other physical activity you may enjoy. Not only does it keep off the "Freshman 15" but keeps you healthy. If your family sends you with an emergency care kit with food, toiletries and other items; manage those for emergency use. Create and have a consistent schedule for studying. If you need help with classes don't wait to speak with professors and don't be afraid to go to tutors. Build good healthy relationships, you'll never know how people you meet in college can be instrumental doing and after college when it's time to network.

You should start college planning to study every day. Attend your classes. Do the homework. When you find a class difficult, attend office hours early in the semester. If you continue to struggle, get a tutor.

Treat school like a job. Get up early, get to work and when your work is done at the end of the day, you can spend time on social life or organizations.

Go to class. Plan to spend 2-3 hours studying for every hour of lecture. Attend your professor's office hours and any TA review sessions. If there is a test bank, use that as a study tool to understand what your professor wants you to focus on for the test.

Raynard’s Answer

There are several things I'd recommend a college freshman engage in to survive their first year. First, I'd recommend creating a schedule that allows you to focus on your studies, but also some time for recreation. Burn out can happen fairly quickly in college if you don't balance work and recreation.

Next, I'd recommend building strong relationships with each of your professors. The quicker you open up dialog with them, the better. It's a lot easier to get on their calendar for help when that relationship is established. Also, I'd encourage you to fight against that urge to turn off the alarm clock and roll over in the morning before class.

Often times, freshman struggle with the lack of structure they experience in college. Mom and Dad aren't typically around to make you get up for class. Understand that your education is important and very expensive, treat it as such.

Finally, my last tip is to PERSEVERE. It will be tough and there will be times you want to give up, DONT! You're much stronger than you know and college is designed to push your limits. Hang in there!
