It all depends.
Many people get a head start in college by going to their local community college during their junior and senior years in high school, which permits them to graduate from community college and high school at the same time. This puts them 2 years ahead of many other students.
I really depends upon how well you get to know to know yourself and people who are working in your career field of interest.

Personally, I began college at the end of the summer following my high-school graduation. This worked out for me as I was still in the swing of things with schoolwork and knew the college I wanted to attend. While this may be most typical, there are certainly other options. Sometimes individuals will decide to take a gap year before selecting their college or determining what it is they want to do. That is totally fine! Another option is to begin taking classes at a local community college after you graduate high-school to see what you might be interested in. From there, you could always transfer to another university!
