If there is a S/W team within your current company, I suggest to start there and build your network. Find out what skills they are looking for and get the education you need. There are many certifications that you can get online now - example: https://www.udacity.com/nanodegree. If you are looking outside your company start with building yourself or updating your LinkedIn profile. You might find a company who will pay tuition reinbursement for you to develop these S/W skills.

One needs to assess themselves on the skillset they posess to move to software developement. If one has a proficiency in a programming language that your current employer has, then it would be good to showcase to them about your secondary skill. may be a side proejct with them. This would help one to find out how it actually to be in software and still gives the time to decide.
