Anytime you can get an opportunity to get real work experience in a field your interested in, you should take it. This will help you get a better sense of the day to day, provide you with real world experience, and you help build a network of contacts. If you can't find any internships then look for volunteering opportunities at hospitals or doctors office. The idea is to get some real experience and make contacts to build our your network.

Look into volunteer work at a local hospital and tell them you would like to be place on their pediatric unit. While on the unit, watch and listen carefully while you volunteering to help as much as possible. Watch the nurses work the first couple weeks to begin to create questions and get an overall vibe of the unit- write down questions and ask them.
Example questions-
Ask them what special characteristics you should have to be a peds nurse.
Ask them what is the good things about the job and what are the bad things about being a pediatric nurse
Ask them what keeps them working in this specialty.
