Instagram will help build an online portfolio for you and if you are good with hashtaging the photos and promoting the Instagram page it can definitely help out. I would also look into other places to get your name and work seen as well. Don't limit yourself to Instagram alone.

Hi John,

Yes. Posting pictures on Instagram will help you build an online portfolio. You will be able to show your versatility as a photographer. This is a great networking tool. You will be able to network with other photographers and groups. Building a strong Instagram presence and following will be your "business card" while you are starting your career.

When you set up the account, set it up seperate from your personal account, and you can also post the pictures on Twitter with a link to a personal site like Google plus.

Mike’s Answer

I think Instagram can definitely help showcase your talent, reach a larger audience, and even allow for feedback from followers and fellow photographers. Your career in photography should potentially include social media presence, an online portfolio and a way for customers to engage and contact you. I would recommend being active in social media so potential customers and fans can interact with you.

Misty’s Answer

I would say that yes it could be a great tool to get your work out there and showcase your talent and build as you progress in knowledge and skill. I would also use hashtags appropriately to get you out to a bigger audience. Also in trying to get your work out in this format, I would say to set up your account so that it is for nothing but your work. A picture of you as the artist every so often would be fine however make sure that it is for the most part separate from your personal account.

Another idea would be to link the account to other media outlets such as linked in and facebook that way you get your work out to more people. I would also be looking online while doing this for freelance photographer positions that could help you with pay while you are getting the other up and running.

David’s Answer

Hi John,

Well, the answer is maybe it will. Of course, your images have to be very good and your hash tags have to help drive people to your Instagram account. However, you also want to be contacting potential clients and have an online portfolio of very good images specific to the market you hope to work for. Instagram is just one of the tools you can use to build your business.
