Now is a great time to looking into future careers. The best thing that you can do is to get to know yourself better to determine if event planner is a suitable career area based upon your personality traits as compared to those who are successful in that area and meet and get to know people working in event planning to see what they do, how they got there, and what suggestions and advice they might have for you.
Getting to know yourself and how your personality traits relate to people involved in various career opportunities is very important in your decision making process. During my many years in Human Resources and College Recruiting, I ran across too many students who had skipped this very important step and ended up in a job situation which for which they were not well suited. Selecting a career area is like buying a pair of shoes. First you have to be properly fitted for the correct size, and then you need to try on and walk in the various shoe options to determine which is fits the best and is most comfortable for you to wear. Following are some important steps which I developed during my career which have been helpful to many .

If you have a local non profit in the area who holds events, look into volunteering to help plan one of these events to get a flavor for what its like to actually work through the entire process. Its a wonderful experience to see volunteers in action as the communication is more transparent with Non profit organizations. Once you've seen the process in action, met those that "Event Plan", ask questions!! Most colleges also have a Majors designed specifically towards Hospitality & Event Management. Set time with your Guidance Counselor to have a conversation about a College near you that may have the courses that would be the best fit. Best of Luck!!!
