Elyse’s Answer

Hi Jose !

The real purpose of college is to get an education that will better your chances of having economic success. That said, to get the most of your college experience and to make some meaningful connections outside of class, it would be a great idea to get involved in some school-affiliated extra-curriculars.

Do you like playing sports, have a passion for a particular subject in school that you really enjoy or even volunteering ? The great thing about college is that there are clubs for almost anything and everything, and it's not difficult to make your own (my little brother even made a Quidditch club at his college, for example). Intramural or club sports are a great way to make friends and stay active - they're less of a commitment than the official sports teams but still offer some structure and opportunities to compete. You could also join a social club of nearly anything that peaks your interest - most colleges have some sort of junior political organizations, academic clubs and so on. Becoming involved in some kind of peer organization is an easy way to make connections with people who might become some of your best friends and contribute to your college experience in a memorable way.

Always remember - your # 1 priority should be your grades, so striking a work -life balance is crucial. Many adults, myself included, refer to college as the best four years of their lives but it is very easy to get distracted so having a level of self-discipline is necessary.

Best of luck !

Elyse

Jacob’s Answer

Hi, Jose,

I think you have a great answer from Elyse already, but I'd like to add one more suggestion.

One facet of your college tenure is totally unique: the time you spend in college is the only period during which you will be entirely surrounded by people roughly your age with similar goals and aspiration and, yet, come from a variety of different backgrounds. My recommendation is that you try to share at least one moment with a stranger each day. It could be a brief conversation while waiting in line to get coffee or a meal or simply a nod and a smile. Doing so will make it easier to interact and connect with people and the world around you. It's something you can carry with you into post-graduate life.

An open mound is a powerful tool. This exercise will help build that characteristic.

I hope this helps - good luck.

Richard’s Answer

Treat school like a job. Get up early, get to work and when your work is done at the end of the day, you can spend time on social life or organizations.

Go to class. Plan to spend 2-3 hours studying for every hour of lecture. Attend your professor's office hours and any TA review sessions. If there is a test bank, use that as a study tool to understand what your professor wants you to focus on for the test.

Join organizations to expand your horizons. Keep and open mind and try out new experiences
