Can a medical student be in two different resident programs ?
I want to become a pediatrician and an OB/GYN. Is being in two different programs possible or will I have to be in a program for a certain amount of years? #medicine

Impossible to do 2 residencies at the same time. They can be done sequentially, but this is a significant investment of time. It usually doesn't happen unless a person changes their mind after finishing a specialty, realizing they picked the wrong specialty during medical school.
The only exception with which I am familiar is Med-Peds which is a combined residency that includes Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.

Salome, I have a friend who graduated from two residencies. Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. He had to do them separately.

Hi Salome! As the answers above state you will have to do the residencies separately but in medical school and with shadowing beforehand as a premed you may understand better which you prefer. As an OB/GYN you still interact fairly with children as well-more so babies. Of course not as much as a pediatrician but if you love children and GYN then it definitely will also be a best of both worlds. I say this because I shadowed an OB/GYN physician and I loved it, it was very dynamic from different cases and surgeries to also visiting the patients after birth in the hospital. For now I would recommend to do well in school and explore medicine in general more because you still have time to decide and medical school will give you a better chance to truly make the decision!
Hope this helps, best of luck!

Residency is a full time job. People cannot complete two residencies at the same time. If people want to finish two residencies, they must be completed one at a time. Each program has a predetermined number of years to complete. For example, ob/gyn is 4 years. internal medicine is 3 yrs, and general surgery is 5 years.
