Any tips on how to juggle 2 jobs and school?

I can't go to school without working as I pay out of pocket, I recently got a second job to help pay my bills. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips to help me not get behind on school work or if anyone in the Mission Texas area seeing this question know of local scholarships that would help

First off, kudos to you for putting in the effort to further your education and pay for it at the same time. I worked while going to school full-time as well...best advice is to just not try to do several tough courses at the same time, or take one/two tough courses during the summer to get them out of the way. Also don't let others' opinions make you second guess your path. In the grand scheme of things the time you are in college is short compared to the rest of your life...it will be difficult but most rewarding. And you will learn how to juggle so many responsibilities in a career and family life way before those who don't have to work/study. Good luck!

Hello.

Working your way through college is challenging but also very rewarding. I worked full time while earning my degree and it required a great deal of discipline and focus.

As to tactics, I found scheduling was key to success. knew I had to make trade offs on where I spent my time, even week to week on which courses I could spend time studying or completing projects. I simply didn’t have time to get everything done. For me, success required understanding each course and professors’ expectation so I could be strategic in what I choose not to do as I managed the scarcity of my time. This allowed me to pick non-critical items to leave undone without risking the opportunity to achieve a high grade in the course.

Looking back now, I am impressed how I did so much with so little for so long. You will find your way and be better for having faced and managed the challenges you will best.

Good luck and enjoy the journey!

I actually had three jobs while going to college full-time. I really think that this was instrumental in my getting my first really good professional job out of school. Some things to avoid are jobs that require outside preparation beyond the actual working hours. Another thing is to avoid jobs that are sources of mental stress. Some folks recommended that I take jobs that were centered around only a few days a week and concentrate on uninterrupted studies the other days. I personally found that breaking up a school day with work hours had a positive effect on my studies. Activities that were very far removed from my studies allowed me to learn better. It seemed that those "non-cerebral" activities or even creative activities that were very different from my studies allowed me to do more "distributed practice", where I was able to mull over what I'd studied that day. Finally, make it clear to your employer that your schooling takes precedence over work. It's much fairer to an employer to state that up front in case of conflicts.
