The smaller the applicant pool, the better your chances will be that you'll get the scholarship. Here are a few tips to make sure you find those scholarships: Make sure that you have looked up all the scholarships that are connected to the universities that you are interested. Look up the service organizations in your area such as Lion's Club and Keys Club to see what local scholarships are available. Research scholarships that are awarded to specifically people with your hobbies or in your demographic.

Hi Ekran: I see that no one has answered this question yet. I was hoping you would hear from others about successfully applying and earning scholarships. But, I don’t have much good news to share with you based on my daughter’s experience. My daughter applied for many scholarships using multiple websites and received nothing.

And, she had an incentive to apply for these scholarships. For every dollar that she received in scholarships… my wife and I advised her that she could keep the money for herself.

During the Spring Semester of her senior year in high school she spent months applying for scholarships. The only scholarship she received was $50 from the Black Employees Association at a company where I used to work.

I hope others reply to your question with positive news on how they applied for and earned scholarships.

By the way, both of my daughters received UNSOLICITED scholarships from colleges. One daughter received an academic FULL RIDE (Tuition, room & board, books) to Fresno State University. Another daughter received $32,000 ($8,000 a year) to go to the University of Arizona. My daughters did not apply for these scholarships -- the schools offered these scholarships to them. My kids received no scholarships from applying online via websites. Their scholarships came from the colleges where they applied.

FINAL NOTE, my kids both attended Arizona State University and received no financial assistance to go to ASU.

Hi Ekran,

I am a freshman attending Arizona State University on a full-ride so I was recently in your position. I have used websites in the past, however, I have always only used this as a way to gain information about scholarships. I would recommend applying for scholarships directly through their website. Also, most school's websites have a scholarship section that will narrow down the results depending on your credentials. Apply for as many as you qualify for and take your time on the essays! Many scholarships are only applicable to incoming students so don't miss out on good odds.

Good luck!
