Matthew’s Answer

Stay Active and Healthy during your time in College, as this will promote better work to be done. '

Make list and set goals for what you want to be done before your week starts and keep working on the list until it is done.

Allow time for studying days before

Prioritize you work, (work hard, but also work smart).

If you work better studying in groups, study in groups as it will help you talk through certain questions and answers giving you a better understanding of the material.

Finally, study what interests you! It is always a lot easier to study things that make you happy!

Hi Jonathan,

It's awesome that you're thinking about good study tips and tools for college! In my experience, it is always helpful to take notes during class and review them afterward. I would also review my notes each day leading up to exams so I am not procrastinating and cramming right before the test. Another helpful tip is to find a group of study buddies to study together with. This helps keep you accountable and motivated to do well! Best of luck!

Alexandra’s Answer

Hi Jonathan!

Congratulations on being accepted to college & thinking ahead for your potential studying needs. As a senior in college now, just about to graduate, I can definitely give some advice on study tips and tools! I would first ask if you know your learning style, for example do you learn better by seeing things (visual), hearing things (auditory), saying things aloud (verbal), doing things yourself (kinesthetic)? It is possible you may favor more than one of these learning techniques. For myself, I choose to learn the best my visually seeing and physically doing the information that I need to study. I often make flash cards, hand-written study guides, and work out problems/questions on blank white paper. This is the ideal way for myself to learn the information needed. Once you have an idea of your own study style, try different activities that may help retain information. You can also google questions such as "whats the best study activities for an auditory learner?", then you can find examples specific for your learning style. Along with that, I recommend finding quiet places around campus, or the location you live in, and work without having distractions (such as noise, other people, etc). It may take a few trial and error moments to figure out the best study style for you, for I promise you will figure it out! Then the studying comes easier, and you will feel more prepared when using the same strategies every time an exam comes up!

Best of Luck!

Alexandra recommends the following next steps:

figure out your learning style
try a few different studying activities that focus on your ideal learning style
find the best environment to study (quiet room, library, coffee shop)
no worries, this may be a trial and error activity until you figure out your ideal studying technique that fits your unique learning style

Ana Cristina’s Answer

Hi Jonathan,

First of all I would say to get organize. Have an agenda with all the to do lists for the day, this will help you not to forget about anything. Also, take notes during class as this is always good for reviewing and for your own knowledge. Always prioritize your work, take a look at the syllabus of every class before you start. Then you would know what books you need, when is your first assignment due and there will be no surprises.

I would suggest to get involve in different clubs/extra curricular activities/sports that you like. This will help you to have some new friends and at the same time get distracted in your free-time. No procrastination time!
