What do I do if I am certain about which career path I want to be on when I enter the Masters program but that focus changes?

I will be entering the MSW program soon. The program offers 3 different focuses. What do I do if I begin the program with one path selected but then my experiences in the program cause me to want to switch paths?

Yolancia’s Answer

My MSW program allows focus changes. Many MSW foundational courses cover all 3 focuses so it's not a problem if you change paths. An MSW is still an MSW. I'm sure other students have changed their focus, so it's best to just mention it to an advisor sooner rather than later.

Lillian’s Answer

You should be able to switch paths later--talk to your academic advisor or graduate school coordinator for how to do that for your specific school and program.

However, just generally speaking, there isn't that big of a difference no matter what path you choose. Your MSW degree and experiences are typically enough for you to qualify to work at whatever kind of job you want.
