How do I prepare for a MasterDoctoral program in psychology?

I took a 7 year break in getting my B.A. in psychology, now I'm finishing it and I want to continue my education so I can #college-major teach Psychology as a career. When I look for information on Master's and Doctoral programs I keep getting online college offers and not much help on how to prepare.

Try googling something like "graduate school psychology how to prepare"

Based on my own experience, you need to prepare by studying and taking the GRE, finding schools, writing some kind of personal statement/narrative essay, finding people to write recommendation letters, and prepare your resume/cv. If you're pursuing a PhD, you most likely need to address some research component as well (e.g. finding a specific professor you'd like to do research under).

If you want to teach Psychology in a university, you will need a doctoral, not a master degree. You should search for PhD programs in, preferrably, public universities. A PhD program will often pay you while you pursue the degree for teaching. If you do not like it, you can leave in 2 years after receiving the Master degree portion of it

Bhavna’s Answer

A perspective I would offer here is to spend some time reflecting on which area(s) within psychology are most exciting to you. Psychology is a vast field of study. You would likely have gotten a good overview of the different fields through the B.A. program. Set up time with your instructors and professors to talk more about the fields they are in to uncover if this is something you would like to get into as well. Partnering with professors in their research projects is another way to learn more about those areas. Doing this reflection for yourself will help you choose the right Masters/Doctoral program based on your interest area(s).
