Do I need to have experience as a surgeon tech in order to work in an operating room as a Nurse?

I'm also wondering if you can choose which department of a hospital (orthopedics, E.R., cardiovascular) to work in the operating room.

Hi Jessica! You do not need experience as a surgical tech to work in the OR as a nurse. However, your experience will be much easier if you do. You will already know the flow of the operating room and can work easier as a nurse. There have been many surgical technologists who went back to nursing school. The benefit of being a surgical tech first then going to nursing school is that you are more marketable! Not only can you work in the surgical tech role but nursing as well but get the nursing pay!

As for your next question, when you are in nursing school you will rotate through many areas during your clinical training. You decide which area you want to make a career in after that.

As a Nurse you should already know the practices of the ER. A surgical Tech Is very knowledgeable in the tools needed as the physician asks so learn all you can and you will be a excellent Rn for the OR. Just FYI it's cold in there .
