Paul’s Answer

Hi Paige:

This is my professional opinion, but you might look at a possible minor in the field of Physical Education. The reason for this is because many of the courses and prerequisites are ones which will eventually be required for a major in the EMT field. When I was reviewing in reference to your question I found many courses related to the EMT major, including courses in:

First Aid and Emergency Response

Women's Health Issues

Anatomy and Physiology

Care and Prevention of Injuries

Athletic Training

CPR and First Aid

Drugs and Sports

Human Physiology

These courses I believe would be very good preparation for the EMT major, and there is a lot of cross over into others areas of the medical services field, especially if you also decided to become an athletic trainer.

Paul recommends the following next steps:

Check the college online catalog to determine which minor to pursue and if it is concurrent with the EMT major.
See your academic counselor to establish an academic plan for your minor.

Lori’s Answer

Hi Paige!
A local state college where I live offers a two-year, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate. I recommend determining if such a program exists in your area or determining if attending such a program away from home may work for you (not all state colleges have on-campus living quarters).

Many who choose the option of a 2-year certificate program do so because they can spend less money on their training and begin making money and gaining practical experience sooner than attending a four-year college. Others may choose this option because they have an interest in emergency medicine but need experience to make a final decision.

Lori recommends the following next steps:

Call or visit your local public library. Speak to a Research Librarian who can help you find lots of resources to find QUALITY programs or help you find resources about your interest. This will lead to ideas and an informed plan.
