David H.’s Answer

When people want to learn more about careers, they often apply for - or even create their own - internships (paid or unpaid) as a way of learning and shadowing professionals. In most internships, o prepare a list of 10 questions relating to the day-to-day life of that professional "mentor"'s life; call your identified mentor where they work, and request 30 minutes of their time to meet with you - ideally at their office - so that you can ask them questions about their career choice and what happens on an ongoing basis. From this initial meeting, you could ask if there are intern possilbities. The best internships are at least 20 hours a week, on a regular weekly schedule for a minimum of 12-18 weeks.

Also, you could contactyour high school or college guidance counselors to ask them to introduce se to human resources personnel in area businesses, large and small, to set up an internship. I work in a museum and we have interns shadowing and working closely with staff to learn from each other while developing on-the-job skills.

Blake’s Answer

Hey Terrell,

Most businesses have some degree of HR in their management system. I think a good HR shadow would be in operations, or in retail. I would recommend reaching out to a local retail store and asking if you can shadow.

Thanks,
Blake
