Austin’s Answer

Hi Kali,

Great questions first of all!! Business is a really wide field and stretches from management, to supply chain, change management, marketing, to business administration. What I am trying to point out is that business is so varied and that the best way to learn what you like and what you do best is to take a broad approach to business. I recommend seeking out jobs and other experiences that let you explore and become exposed to all the different sides of business which thus enables you so truly understand the whole gambit of the business world and what you prefer.

Consulting is a great path to pursue because of its ability to enable varied experiences. I am a consultant currently and I can tell you that no two projects are the same; they require different skills and different solutions. Because of this I am afforded a varied multifaceted work experience in a relatively short amount of time given that an project is usually from 6 months to one year.

Consulting is not the end all be all by any means, but it is a good place to start. If not consulting, then pursue other jobs that allow for a varied work experience.

I wish you the best and please let me know should you have other questions!!

Best,

Austin

I'd take a look at what really fuels your passion. The world is evolving and the field of "marketing" within business is changing dramatically. The use of the internet, digital marketing, email marketing, social media marketing, etc. is fascinating. Find your passion and follow it.

Leonardo’s Answer

Hi Kali !

This is a very good question and it hurts a lot of people on the beginning of their careers.

The best advice i received in terms of planning is start with what kind of life do you want to have. What are the things that make you happy ? Do you like to be pressured or live a more relaxed life ? There is no right or wrong however the better you know what makes you happy the easier it will be to define what kind of industry do you want to pursue. Imagine that you are a very calm and relaxed person and you ended up getting/pursuing an opportunity in wall street as a business analyst. You can even do a good job, get promoted, but will you be happy with it ?

Leonardo recommends the following next steps:

Ok so what can you do to take a more informed decision about yourself focusing on being happy with what you do ? Try to make a list of things you are inspired by and things you like to do. Environments and situations that you like being in and others that don`t drawn a lot of your attention.
Try to match it with industries now, research a little bit about the culture of companies you admire and see how to pursue a career in those places. A good point of start is summer internships and trainee programs.
Look for advise from consolidated professionals on those fields. Dont know anyone ? No problem, cold contact on linkedin works very well, just be polite :) hope it helps you!

Cassandra’s Answer

Hi Kali,

Business can be a great choice to explore, as it has many different avenues. When getting a business degree, many people choose to focus on a specific area within business, which again can be a wide range. There are options such as entrepreneurship, marketing, human resources, and public relations, just to name a few.  Depending on the size of the office you are working in, may change up some of the responsibilities you may encounter while entering into office management. In a smaller setting, you may handle receptionist type duties, such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, filing invoices etc. If you are considering higher opportunities within the company, these may include managing some of employees who handle the day to day operations of the company. My suggestion would be to speak to others within your organization to learn more about what they do, and see what interests you.
