Ben’s Answer

Great question! When you start out, it'll involve a lot of logging footage, i.e. going through all the footage and labeling it with descriptions. As you move up, you'll start to be able to edit clips together that the main film editor assigns to you. Once you get to the top, you'll be working with the film director to help sculpt the story.

Irit’s Answer

I have been both a post house editor and a news editor. I felt like my post house editing was much more creative, but creativity takes time. Sometimes I would never know when my day would end. This makes it hard to have a family. I switch to news because I wanted a regular schedule, regular pay and benefits. I made more money on my own, but the trade off was it was more stressful.

As a news editor, I work on specialty packages. I like it because I am getting information out to the public. I feel like I am doing a service for people. That being said, my days are never the same. It all depends on the producer I am working with or the subject matter that is edited. The only thing I can tell you is that I finish my day at the same time every day so that I can go home and have a life.
