Is it possible to get a double major with a nursing degree?

I know that I for sure want to major in music. It’s my life and I don’t want to change that. But I would like to find another major to get just because music isn’t the most reliable sometimes. Would getting a nursing degree take too much to double major with? #college-major #nursing

Jeffrey’s Answer

Hello, one of my kids is in the same position! My wife and I suggested pairing the two majors that can relate or have higher success at both such as music and a business degree . A science degree like nursing I feel is too far of contrast to music to be successful at both. Nursing school is intense with anatomy, organic chemistry etc. The amount of time you spend studying in a medical career can be a lot.

However, there are schools like Florida State that has a musical therapy program that relates to helping other through music, which fits your need to help another. A friend of mine has a major in classical guitar paired with a musical therapy and loves her career.

I would look into other aspects of music as well such as production, business, communications. To open up you horizons.

Jeffrey recommends the following next steps:

Search google for careers relating to to music and career options for the degree.

Aurora’s Answer

Please keep in mind that the courses required for nursing and for music will involve lots of lab and studio courses which can be extremely time intensive. (You may want to consider a minor in music rather than a major.) That being said, I have advised students who have pursued wildly different majors such as Studio Art and Biology with great success! It depends on what you are passionate about.

I think Jeffrey's suggestion to find a way to integrate your two - only seemingly different - interests is a productive one and you should look into options for doing that, including schools that may offer such pathways.
