Hi Andrea,
Good question! The classes you take will depend on your major and where you go to school. Since you're in California, let's imagine that you want to become an elementary teacher. One of the country's best schools is USC Rossier School of Education: https://rossier.usc.edu/
You might also want to check out this website: https://www.teachercertificationdegrees.com/certification/california/. It has information about getting a teaching certificate, types of certificates, and best schools to attend.
I think the first thing you want to do is decide what you want to teach and then find the best program. You'll take basic courses, but then you'll take specialized courses for your major. I majored in special education - I took more psychology, development, and language courses than a regular elementary teacher.
Good luck and in your journey ..... keep asking great questions,
Stephanie

Hi Andrea,
That is an excellent question to ask before beginning your degree program. As Stephanie Hamilton mentioned, it is best to look into programs in your state, to ensure that you meet the licensure requirements, I am certifying out of state and it adds additional hassle in ensuring that you have taken the right courses and exams. Best to avoid this if possible.
If you have time you may want to explore the California Department of of Education Requirements (https://www.cde.ca.gov/) and then ask specific questions about licensure courses and department philosophies when visiting schools or asking for information.

You will have to take your basic classes (Math, writing, humanities, etc. your first year. As you start your education classes for grade school you will take what are called Methods classes. These class will teach you how to teach each subject. While in these classes you will learn and practice how to write lesson plans based on state standards.
Good luck. I hope you will enjoy teaching as much as I have over the last 28 years!
