Lisa’s Answer

Hopefully you are ok around blood! (I’m not and I’m not a medical doc!)

Do you love people and want to help people?

Do you love science?

Are you willing to be in school for a LONG time? And work incredibly hard? I have a PhD in Education and I had to work really hard…but I didn’t have to deal with blood!

Ask more more questions if you like. I have friends who are doctors and I know how hard they had to work. My primary care doc is wonderful and I know how hard she worked. She’s been my doc for 20 years and I love her and am so lucky she’s my doc. Do you like your doctor? Ask him/her about what it was like to become a doctor and if he/she knows a doctor you can talk with or “shadow” (following the doc around a hospital). Don’t be shy! Ask!!!

Lisa recommends the following next steps:

Don’t be shy! People want to help! If not, they will say so!

Richard’s Answer

There are a lot of long hours studying in the library followed by long hours in the hospital, but it is a fulfilling career. There are so many opportunities after medical school... different specialties appeal to different individuals. Or you can follow a nonclinical route in research or even hospital administration.

Crystal’s Answer

Before pursuing the medical field, I suggest doing the following:

Crystal recommends the following next steps:

Intern/shadow/talk to medical professionals and medical students in your field of interest to see their day-to-day work life balance
Are you ok with blood? Can you handle the subject matters covered in medical school?
Why do you want to do medicine? Hold to that value and that mission when you face your obstacles
What are your obstacles/constraints that may be in your way? (ie money, time, lifestyle) Weigh the pros and cons
