Angela’s Answer

Be persistent in making phone calls (or preparing yourself for in person visits if the facility allows during Covid-19) to your local zoos, animal shelters, and vet clinics and when calling them, have some questions and background info about yourself prepared. This may sound something like "Hi, my name is Elijah, I'm a high school student preparing to study and pursue a career in Zoology at a University and I was wondering what volunteer or internship opportunities you might have?". I'm not sure where you're located as your profile doesn't reflect this, however, you can also try connecting with your local 4H Club and/or Nature Center/Wildlife Rehabilitation Facility. It would also be helpful for you to start thinking about what aspect(s) of Zoology you want to pursue.....Do you want to be a zookeeper? A professor of Zoology? A Conservationalist? A Wildlife Biologist? A Marine Biologist? Would you want to work with terrestrial animals or marine creatures? For example, I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Michigan State University with a minor in Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology. I wanted to go to Veterinary Medical School but it didn't work out. Now, I have a career at a Global Life Sciences company as a BioProcess Specialist. In high school, I volunteered at my local vet clinic to start gaining animal experience. Again, don't be afraid to make those phone calls and seek out those opportunities....many local zoos, Nature Centers, and the like would love to have extra help from you as it's typically hard to find. Be prepared in college to take courses not only related to Zoology, but also in fields such as Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. Do some research online to seek out opporunities to work with animals near you and find out exactly what areas of Zoology you're interested in. Work hard, don't be afraid to spread your wings outside of your local area too, and good luck!
