Hi Danny,

There are several steps you can take to help advance your position within a company. Here are a few things that are I've found extremely beneficial.

1) Stay relevant, continue to learn more and understand changes within the industry

2) Network, Network and Network! Some positions may not be posted because it is through networking that the hiring manager already knows who they will hire and offer them the job directly.

3) Be patient. While you may want to advance now, it may not be your time. Continue to perform at high levels and be patient for the right opportunity to open up that matches your skill set.

4) Excel in what you do, become the best and set the standard! Perform at your best and ask for more when you can to show you are able to handle more than one responsibility.

These have all paid off for me, I hope this information helps you along your career path.

Thanks,

Erica

Thank you comment icon Excellent points from the first advisor! I would add, make your intentions known to your manager. Be direct in letting them know you intend to advance and ask them if there is a pathway already established. You can then reference it to understand what type of certifications, projects or leadership experience the next level requires. Also, letting your manager knows your intentions can gain you an advocate who will keep you in mind for opportunities that may come up for your advancement or skill building needs. MJ A

Sharyn’s Answer

Talk to your manager, let him/her know your interested in climbing the ladder. Ask another leader or supervisor if they would be willing to mentor you. Prove yourself, work hard, and don't wait for opportunities to come your way...go get them, seek them, and don't be afraid! I've applied for positions I thought were outside my comfy zone or not qualified for, and my energy, passion, willingness and attitude got me to those jobs. Be honest and try to learn something new everyday!

Hi Danny. A couple suggestions. For whatever job you want next try doing an informational interview with someone that already has the role. Ask what skills helped them obtain and exceed in the role. In addition, work with your current manager to develop the skills needed. You have to be proactive. Your boss can provide coaching. But It’s up to you to manage your career.

Toby’s Answer

Danny,

I have found two things really important to advance within an organisation.

1) Make sure you do your current role really well.

2) Think about what you want to do next, if it a promotion in your own team ask your manager for a side project that can help develop your skills, and prove to your manager that you have the skills to get to what you want to do.

If it is outside your team, speak to the manager of the team you would like to work in.

It will benefit you in the following ways:

1) Let's you test the role or responsibility

2) Will provide you with some new skills

3)Will help prove to your current org you can do the role, and also you are taking ownership of your own career

Thanks
