Both formal training and OJT. There are many good courses, both college level and 1-2 day short courses offered by business institutes. Also getting a job where I saw material handling distribution operations from the ground up helped me understand the principles I received in the courses. Third, learn the "up stream" and "down stream" side of material handling distribution operations. What procedures bring the material to this operation and where does the material go when it leaves here. This will help you better understand what impact any decisions you make will have on ALL operations.
