What is a good career path for someone who enjoys deliberating in meetings?

Most people hate sitting in meetings all day, but I enjoy it. I am involved in Student Government, and think Higher Education Administration might be a good fit. What are some other good career path for someone like me? #career #meetings #higher-ed #business #administration #college

Hi Maxwell.  You can find a lot of career paths that require deliberating in meetings.   Some important aspects to consider while in these meetings are to be respectful and open to other ideas, take time to understand the culture of the company, and then speak to the why behind the what to get buy-in.  Avoid having meetings just to have them, since that can take away from the productivity or cause boredom of the others in the room.  You want the meetings to be purposeful.  I have been in several meetings which I have considered a waste of time.  I suggest you avoid that!  https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/253804

I would look at Project Management. I found this series of articles - I'm not sure how accurate they are, but, they are a good start. https://www.paymoapp.com/blog/the-complete-project-manager-guide/

I too like discussing things in meetings, brainstorming with others. Unfortunately, throughout my career, most of the meetings I have attended have been of the type where everybody remains silent, and simply roll their eyes at those who try to actively participate. Sometimes the organizational leadership is such that they are not truly looking for feedback - only an affirmation that their idea is a good one. When you start a new job, you will want to observe the first couple of meetings to get a grasp of the dynamics of the meetings.

Deliberating with those who truly enjoy it is fun and invigorating. Best of luck with your search to find the right fit!

Jordan’s Answer

I would suggest looking into sales! I manage a team of salespeople and we work in the technology industry, and meeting with clients (particularly negotiating with clients) is a huge aspect of our job. On the management side, I am in meetings all day long with other key business partners in efforts to drive our sales team to do better; this requires a lot of deliberating/negotiating, and I love it!

Jordan recommends the following next steps:

Find a friend who works at a company with a sales team that would allow you to shadow for a day!

Michele’s Answer

Most fields engage in some type of group discussion, even engineering fields where you work in teams and someone needs to be a leader, to organize, to report to managers, to report to customers. Sales, Product Development, Marketing, Grant Writing/Presenting .. all need someone who is comfortable and excited about communicating their topic views and ideas.

Michele recommends the following next steps:

Apply to companies to participate in their internship programs, and ask to shadow someone in these areas.
