What careers in economics are there that involve being a part of a team?
I am very interested in economics, but worry if I get an economic degree, I will be stuck behind a desk doing research, or teaching. I enjoy being a valued member of a team or community, and wonder if there is #career in #economics that will allow for that. #business #college #college-major

Hi Maxwell:
I work for a company that hires A LOT of Economics Majors. And, these Econ grads are not stuck behind a desk at our company. All of our employees are out there in the community volunteering as a team for Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement or at the local Food Bank. Our employees participate in 3-day camping excursions to volunteer at Grand Canyon, Zion, and Yosemite National Parks.
If you have 4 minutes to kill, check out this video of CSAA Insurance Group employees volunteering at our National Parks:

Yeah, there are a lot companies where you will sit behind a desk all day. That can happen if you are an Econ Major, English Major, Communications Major, International Studies Major, Chemistry Major, etc.
The key is to find a company that is a blast to work for and allows you to bring your whole self to work where you can excel personally and professionally.
My advice ?
Don't worry so much about the job.
I'd pay more attention to the company and the person you will work for when looking for a job.

If you enjoy learning about economics, you should continue with the degree and learn skills that are transferrable to a group/community setting that you desire. You may not get an economic-specific one in your first shot due to what's available (may even have to create one in the future), but you should keep your eyes and mind open while learning skills as you go, they are never unhelpful!

Maxwell,
I know of two economics majors who went on to work for Farmer's Insurance and Freddie Mac. In both cases both were part of a team of market analysts.
