Jay’s Answer

Depending on what state you live in it’s as simple as filling out the proper forms and sending a money order for the Apprentice Registration in Texas the fee is $15 annually and must be renewed each year until you receive your Tradesman license.

Bob’s Answer

Most trade licenses are from a local municipality. It varies from state to state, and from municipality to municipality. Many licenses are just for the municipality to be sure you have the appropriate insurances to do the work.

Bob recommends the following next steps:

Check with the construction enforcement agency of the place you want to work.
There is now a requirement in NJ to have a State license to be a building professional. This requires proof of a liability and worker's comp policy, and to pay the registration fees with the state. It is a simple process, but you cannot apply for permits without a license.
