How to get an internship abroad

I'm always looking for software-developer internship for student abroad but I always find the requirements too high for me, even thought I'm going at university so I should be able to satisfy them.
What can you suggest me to do?

Summer internships for college students are very popular in the high tech industry. Companies are investing in internship programs to be able to find new employees. These programs are well documented on the companies' websites. This will give you a sense of what kind of skills employers are looking for. You have to be specific about what you want to do, and for which industry/company. You could get some "professional" experience locally then apply for an internship at a company abroad . It will help you differentiate from other applicants.

Getting an internship abroad is definitely not easy.

If you are really interested in them but didn't hear back from any of your companies, I would suggest looking up for some international internship program agency. There are some with really good reputation and they are extremely pricey($$$$) imo, but they do include accommodate on living and visa, also they schedule all meetings for you and your potential employers (usually startups), they get things done for that price.

I applied more than 200 application over 2 years before I got my first interview and first internship at a fortune 500. Never give up :)

Hi Yuri,

I would recommend you to look into the startup industry, startups are highly multicultural and you can quite easily find one where English is the main language used at work.
With startups, feel free to be yourself and let you personality shine through your communication. I'd recommend finding startups you like and reaching out to people who work there on Linkedin to ask about the working culture, positions, etc... Networking is very helpful to meet people in your industry and to learn more about the work culture.

Good luck!

Hi Yuri!

I was studying at a university in California and I did a summer internship in Germany as a software engineering. It was definitely a great experience.

Internships in general, in your country or abroad, are pretty competitive. I applied to A LOT of internships, most of them did not even get back to me before I heard from the one I eventually got.

So what are some of the things you can do?

  • Make sure you have a solid, well-written resume / C.V - have friends/professors/mentors review it. Have a clear mission statement at the top
  • Differentiate yourself with links to portfolio of your work
  • Include a cover letter *tailored* to the company and work you would be doing and explaining why you are a great candidate for the position
  • Update your Linkedin.com page
  • Find recruiters on linkedin and reach out
  • Apply, apply, apply - Early (I had my abroad summer internship offer in January )
  • Be positive

Best of luck!
