Civil engineers work on designing, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure. Typically this means public works, but you may find yourself working for a private sector company as a contractor working for a local, regional, or national government organization. Depending on what role you play, you might find yourself drafting, writing documentation for a project, working on proposals for new works, making site visits (hard hat!), reading about new engineering technologies or methods, and so on. Expect to spend a fair amount of time in front of your computer, on site visits, and working with other engineers, builders, or project managers in person or on the phone.
The educational and training requirements are significant. You should definitely build up your math and science skills in preparation for this occupation.

Your technical knowledge will allow you to work in:
- Engineering design (where you work with firms to develop drawings for infrastructure or facilities). You will be using software to model buildings and/or other structures
- Construction (whether it's roads, buildings, general infrastructure etc..) where you can start your career as a site engineer, and then progress gradually to project management. You have to note here that there could be a range of possibilities of what role you can assume in a construction company, such as working in estimation, cost control, scheduling and the likes.
- Geotechnical investigations related to soil investigations, and this could stretch to other laboratory work
On the other hand, It is very common that you could end up in other industries given your analytical skills, such as consulting, because they value the "problem-solving" approach that engineers follow.

If you are looking at this, as a career path you can begin with pursuing a diploma/engineering in civil followed by an internship. Moving forward, you can either free lance or work with companies who actually BUILD!
