Rita’s Answer

I like the suggestion of volunteering that was offered by Robin. Volunteering is a great way to demonstrate your commitment to your chosen future profession. You also need to find ways to gain patient contact hours. A few good ways that I have seen students pursue patient contact hours are: personal care assistant, pharmacy technician and clinic scribe. You can also consider shadowing doctors that may be in your area of interest. Best wishes!

Richard’s Answer

Volunteer at your local hospital or low-income clinic. Ask physicians, PAs or other clinical providers if you can shadow them.

Medical school takes 4 years to complete.

After medical school physicians complete a residency for additional training. These can last 3-6 years and are sometimes followed by an additional year or two of fellowship subspecialty training.

ROBIN’s Answer

We hosted a college student one summer who is now about to graduate from medical school. She enjoyed volunteering at a local community clinic and was getting experience in patient intake and taking vital signs such as temperature and blood pressure. She also weighed the patients. She learned about the medical charts and had limited patient interaction. She did not receive payment for her time as it was only as a volunteer. Yet, this was excellent experience for her as she prepared to begin medical school.

If you need to earn money for college, then seek a position in any medical clinic which is hiring. Even if you are only answering phones and making appointments it will be beneficial to be in a clinic setting to observe its operation.

Hope you will find an opportunity related to the medical field this summer!

Thank you comment icon Robin, your advice is great! I agree with you about volunteering as my son who is a resident Pediatrician volunteered one summer while in college at a private Pediatrician's office. The knowledge and experience he gained was beneficial. He formed a very close relationship with the office and even now while he's in another state, he and that Pediatrician's office still keep in touch. Sheila Jordan
