What impact can 5G have on education?

I know that 5G is the fifth generation of technology which enables the IOT (Internet of things) and mobile broad band. However, I would like to know what changes 5G would bring in education and student learning process? #tech

Deepak’s Answer

Dear Shanvi,

I like your question. In fact 5G expands the horizons to many other domains, but i will restrict my answer to impacts on education & learning process.

In Verizon we express 5G in 8 currencies/capabilities

Latency & Reliability - End to End latency of 5 milli secs, Reliability to 99.9999%
Speed & Throughput - Peak data rate 10Gb/sec , Mobile data volume 10Tb/s/sqkm
Mobility & connected devices - Mobility 500kms/hr, Connected Devices 1M/sqkm
Service deployment & service efficiency - service deployment time 90mins, Energy efficient time is 10% of current consumption

With all these 5G capabilities. . All your contents in your textbooks can be transformed to virtual reality or augment reality or mixed reality contents. you objects and cases in your subjects can become interactive. you can run as many test cases you are interested visually using simulations which yields results in mins. This will transform learning experience to the student. This will help student to understand topics real quick.

Content revolution - Understanding few topics like electro magnetic frequencies in motors or electron's movements in solids, liquids, gases & many other minute or macro topics like space study , aero dynamics etc will be hard to visualize for students from theory of textbooks. Its a good opportunity for content providers to transform complex topics to AR/VR/MR based content.

Fast in downloads , Security in experience will take user experience in 10X levels. In short 5G will bring lot of possibilities to complete education industry.

Hope this helps.

Let me know if need any further information.

Thanks,
Deepak

Great question, 5G opens up a lot of possibilities with access to more data and more technology which can lead to a lot more collaboration. This can lead students and teachers to break down classroom walls and expand to other countries around the world. This would lead to a much more interactive approach and even get a hands on experience.

Jason’s Answer

5G helps facilitate moving massive amounts of data very quickly and at low latency. This means you can have real-time ultra high resolution video streaming and video chats. It also allows for the devices you use in learning like a laptop, tablet or phone to have less processing power on board because this super high speed communication means you can send information to a cloud server, process it there, and then stream the results back. This could help facilitate distance learning in remote areas where things like power and battery life are a real concern.

Jason’s Answer

Good Morning Shanvi,

As Jason mentioned 5G provides super low latency and consistent high speeds,  which means that your connection to others has no delay and is real time. I believe this will allow students from all over the world to collaborate with real time video and download resources like books, videos, documents in seconds not minutes to hours. Imagine students doing science experiments with multiply classrooms across the world and being able to receive feedback and make adjustments real time?  No need to write up a failed attempted and wait for others to provide feedback and start over. This can allow students to find breakthroughs way faster compared to current methods especially in the science field. No buffering, more people can connect to each other and no more waiting on downloads! I hope this was helpful and you see the benefits in your area in the near future!
