Should I be worried that I don't know a lot about how fast technology is growing?

Coding sounds really hard, and I took an introductory class in it before. I dont plan on going into the tech industry, but it is becoming a growing part in everyday life. What concerns should the average non-tech professional worry about in regards to the unknowns of the inner workings behind coding and software? #tech

Trudy’s Answer

Technology has changed so much, my children who grew up with IPads and IPhones thought our tv was also a touch screen . They do not know how an analog phone or tape recorder works, and they learned how to adeptly use Youtube and Google search before they learned how to tie their shoes! <span style="color: rgb(93, 103, 106);">Yes being on devices 24/7 does have its cons and what I am teaching is nothing in excess is good for you, not even water. Moderation is the key word when it comes to the uses of devices. With that context, does that mean you should be fearful of how fast technology is changing? No! People use so many buzz words (Machine Learning, Data Science, Cyber Security, Crypto currency, Block Chain, etc...) that many highly experienced people barely understand what they truly mean, how they will be applied, and the impacts of these new technologies. </span>

<span style="color: rgb(93, 103, 106);">You are not alone in this fear! T</span>echnology is continuously changing and instead of trying to stay on top of all the technology change, embrace the fact technology can improve our lives if we can identify a valid use case for them. For example, I love the ring device! What a great way to have a camera and be able to check who is at your door while you are away? If you can be the person that thinks of that <span style="color: rgb(93, 103, 106);">innovative</span> idea on how technology can be used and people would be willing to buy it, (that is business development and product management at its core!) you are one step ahead of all the other people. Knowing how to apply and build a business case for the use of technologies in the business world is what is key. So do not be afraid of the pace of technology change, instead look for that opportunity on how the technology change can be applied to improve our lives. And if you really want to dive into a specific technology, there is always Google to help you search the internet so you can read up on what the latest technology and how that is being applied in companies or schools.

Mary’s Answer

Technology is an exciting and rewarding field to have a career in, no need to be worried that you don't know a lot about how fast technology is growing. As a next step you could start reading about technology from any major news source to increase your knowledge about the technology industry. Additionally you could check your schools course offerings for next year to find out if they have any technology classes that you could take. I took a technology class in high school that sparked my interest in technology. You school might also have clubs or student organizations you could join to learn more about technology. There are many ways to increase your knowledge, good luck!

Mary recommends the following next steps:

Sign up for a technology class at your school next year.
