I think it is very beneficial for students pursuing the nursing field to get hands on experience as soon as possible. If you are old enough to work, becoming a CNA (certified nursing assistant) will give you some very valuable hands on experience. I have had many students spend two years in nursing, then realize they do not like the sight of blood or other bodily fluids. You have to have a strong stomach and a true desire to nurture and care for others.

Hi Jaki,
Nursing is a wonderful career and I am delighted to hear that you are interested! I would recommend that you take as many math and science classes as you can. Both of those fields will help you develop the critical and analytical thinking skills that are essential to being a competent nurse. I would also recommend that you seek out some volunteer or internship opportunities in a healthcare facility so that you can get a feel for the day-to-day life as a nurse. Hope this was helpful. Best wishes!
