Jason’s Answer

Hi Trevor – there's a few ways to answer this:

  1. If you mean a "web designer", as in someone who primarily creates HTML and CSS sites, then almost no math (beyond addition and subtraction) is required
  2. If you mean a "web designer" who is creating complex Javascript applications, potentially using physics engines (like in games), then a strong understanding of math is helpful, but not required. There are very few times when you'll need to create something from scratch – most professionals just re-use existing code (like Unreal Engine, for example) to get what they need done.
  3. Consider whether "web designer" is a relevant job title anymore. Sites like Squarespace have made this profession a bit outdated. Most small companies will use Facebook and a service like Squarespace to handle most of their digital marketing. Only really big companies like Nike, Microsoft, etc will create custom-built websites, and they tend to have very specialized roles for the people who do this work (e.g. UX Designer or UI Engineer).

Hope that's helpful!
