The Indeed website posts the average mechanical engineer's salary at $91,000 in the Boston area (http://www.indeed.com/salary/q-Mechanical-Engineer-l-Boston,-MA.html). Starting salaries for mechanical engineers fresh out of college average between $50,000 - $60,000 (http://work.chron.com/average-entrylevel-mechanical-engineers-salary-11090.html) . In my mind, there isn't a better undergrad degree than engineering. It's a terrific foundation for pursuing nearly any graduate degree and has one of the highest starting salaries right out of college. I am a mechanical engineer and my daughter is in school for mechanical engineering. My older son wants to get into stem cell research and so is getting his bioengineering degree just in case he decides he's had enough of school and wants to work instead of pursuing a graduate degree. My youngest son wants to be a hand surgeon and so he is going to get a bioengineering degree as well because it will prepare him for medical school....and also gives him a great "Plan B" if he doesn't get in or decides he'd rather do bioengineering as his life's career. Engineering, especially mechanical (and variants like bioengineering) give you so many options both in jobs and in pursuing advanced degrees. Best of luck to you! Robin
