The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes something called the "Occupational Outlook Handbook" which gives people insight on possible job opportunities in a variety of career fields. It lists the qualifications needed for jobs, the expected salaries, and even the job outlook (which tells you if the job is going to grow, meaning more opportunities, or shrink, meaning less opportunities).
