Pam’s Answer

I've found that the answer to this question changes throughout the different levels of career progression. At the beginning of my career as a new hire at an accounting firm, the opportunity to travel to clients all over the country and build communication skills was most rewarding. As I was promoted into more managerial roles, using the skills that I had developed to help clients and teach younger accountants was very rewarding.

Reto’s Answer

Adalberto,

I'm in a specialty practice, providing accounting advice to audit and non-audit clients. I love the puzzles we solve, the advice I provide to my clients, the complex situations we get involved and can provide value to mgmt; providing me the opportunity to coach my staff, see them grow and develop as they can tackle more and more challenging tasks and take on incremental responsibilities.

Best regards,

Holley’s Answer

You've already received some great answers. One common theme I see is around people. A big part of what makes careers rewarding is working with others who motivate and challenge you. Whether you're new and seeking coaches/mentors or have been in the career for a bit and get to be a coach or mentor yourself, being surrounded by people who help challenge you and motivate you to learn and grow is very important. That has been true in all the jobs I've had so far!

Victor’s Answer

Hi Adalberto,

The most rewarding aspect of my job is developing my skills and helping to foster the growth of my team. Regardless of the route you take in a career in accounting, you will find yourself working with others. Being courteous understanding, and staying true to who you are will be the qualities that people around you will value. For example, being a senior associate, I constantly lead new teams, which exposes me to new people and different learning styles. Acknowledging each person's strengths and professional areas they want to work on allows me to help them grow. As I teach others, I am reinforcing my own knowledge and understanding.

In an ever-changing industry, learning from others' successes and challenges makes us all better and produces a higher quality end product - whatever that may be.

Joseph’s Answer

Hi Adalberto,

Both your questions are very good. Being an auditor, I think one of the most rewarding parts of my job is the problem solving aspect of it. Sometimes I get assigned a task that isn't very straightforward and it requires me to come up with creative solutions to find an answer. For example, my boss wants me to create different scenarios to test significant estimates in a financial model. Well, I had to come up with a way to present what I was trying to accomplish in Excel, so that he could easily follow it. Doing tasks like that is very rewarding in my opinion. Also, working in a team can also be very rewarding and that is what people would most typically talk about in our profession so I'll leave it at that.

Hope that helps!

For me personally, it has given me the opportunity to learn and grow from a wide range of individuals with diverse backgrounds and become a professional that my client feels comfortable asking my advice when a new business or accounting change takes place.

Allison’s Answer

Just starting off in my career as an auditor, I would definitely say that the vast network of people that I get to interact with on a daily basis is the most rewarding aspect. There are people of all different backgrounds and experiences that I have the ability to learn from and interact with as we work together to solve a common problem. There is a greater chance of gaining access to new opportunities if you constantly network and expand your connections as well.

James Constantine’s Answer

Dear Adalberto,

I may not be an accountant, but I've witnessed their dedication firsthand. I saw one tirelessly working at my father's liquor factory throughout all the weekends. And weekdays. Arthur, as he was called, must have truly loved his job, as the books were consistently well-kept. As kids, we used to joke about him as "the octopus".

As a child, I received telescopes as gifts and dreamt of becoming an astrophysicist. However, in 1974, a sudden family tragedy, the death of my uncle at the young age of 38, changed my path.

It was a massive coronary, with 100% blockage of all 5 coronary arteries. I've always been a compassionate individual, and this event only amplified it. I changed my study major when my uncle's former boss soon became a biochemistry lecturer at our local university. I did not study medicine because the doctors could not save my uncle. They had tried to resuscitate him for an hour.

Inspired by this, I shifted my focus from a rigorous STEM field to the fascinating world of biochemistry, following my uncle's legacy. Alongside this, I had been teaching myself computer programming since high school in 1972.

In 1988, I decided to study dietetics and nutrition. By 1994, I found a way to merge my knowledge of computing and nutrition, and began developing software. I've dedicated around 5,000 hours annually to this endeavor.

When my father passed away at the age of 50, it only fueled my determination to assist those suffering from illnesses. Although it was too late for my family, I strive to help others through my software, Diet Wizard.

Over 35 years I have worked with dozens of doctors. I have seen thousands of patients at 50 hospitals and 30 community health centers. You'll also find some of my artwork and content related to UFOs and the US Military on YouTube.Studio channel.

May God be with you,
JC.

I find my job in public accounting very rewarding, particularly because it involves helping people. Not only do we help clients, but we also help each other. Employees get opportunities to mentor and teach interns and new hires beginning very early in their careers. From there the opportunities continue to build. I feel that the overall environment of learning, teaching, and growing is highly rewarding.

Joshua’s Answer

I am an audit partner at a fairly large regional CPA firm. Having started with the firm straight out of college when the firm was about 50-60 people and helping the firm grow to north of 1,500 employees has been very rewarding. That said, the most rewarding aspects of my job are the following: 1) providing the highest level of services to my clients and gaining their trust as a business partner/advisor 2) providing promotion opportunities to any and all deserving employees 3) being able to provide "financially" for my family and 4) helping mentor Senior Managers so that they are read for the ultimate promotion to Partner.

If I had to choose one of the above that drives me the most at this point in my career, it would be #4. I want to ensure that my firm continues to provide young professionals with the opportunities I had to make partner when I first started. There will always be opportunities to provide industry leading best in class service to your clients and if you take care of #1, then #2 and #3 will take care of themselves. #4 is the ultimate reward for hard work, dedication and a career in servitude to one's clients all the while driving value and becoming an asset to the firm. At this point in my career, helping the employees that have supported me and my clients throughout my career make it to partner is the ultimate reward.

Vincent’s Answer

For me it’s simply helping others. I highly suggest you make time to develop the people around you and pass on your skills. It's not easy starting a new job and you can really make an impact on someone’s day. I'm in my position because individuals took the time to help me, so I feel strongly to continue that tradition. Also, when the people grow under you, your job becomes easier and you can be promoted. Best of Luck!
