Job entry/internship for late starters

I'm a 27 year old second year undergraduate student. With no related work experience, how's it possible for me to get a #job or #internship in data science, machine learning or related fields (currently in Berlin)?

Mr.’s Answer

Ian K,

First off I want to say you are not a late starter dont ever let this society give you that impression. You can go to indeed.com and type in data science intern jobs and you will find pages of related employment. I would suggest you have atleast two professors willingly be references, network on LinkedIn.com (you'll most likely find the general managers and or CEOs of the companies you are applying to up there) and volunteer at Realworldone GmBh & Co. KG, Kayak or at Google. Mr. Behan said it best you should find a company where you walk in through the front door and ask to speak to someone that would hear you out and then explain your situation eventually someone will give you a chance. Ian you are grown but still a youth you have about 13 years before life really begins so put one foot in front of the other and walk straight mate. I wish you the best on your journey.

Thank you comment icon Go to meetup.com and sign up for the Data Science Festival in Berlin, Germany and while you are up there speak to the people up there and see where it goes. Mr. Constant III

Hi Ian. You are commended for having a specific goal. Here are some ways to get an internship.

  1. Check with your department head, professors, graduate students, ask for leads to the kind of internship you are after
  2. Do internet searches in your area. Indeed.com will turn up internships; sometimes with small salaries.
  3. Post a notice on appropriate social media "I'm seeking an internship in ________. Can you offer me any leads to find one?"
  4. Find some firms in your area that are of interest and then just go there an ask. I'm not kidding. Literally, walk in the front door, ask the first person you see if you can talk to someone there about an internship. They will either ask you to leave or find someone for you to talk to. Most likely the latter. If you do this with 3-4 firms one of them will likely bite. Someone will be impressed with your determination.

Good luck.

the first thing is I hope you can clam down , do not be nervous ,when I was your age, I push me out and working really hard ,but my life do not change, I need to earn more fee to pay tuition , and I feel sad , I think push too hard may no be a good things. You can try to do things what you really want to do ,no just want to find the job ,because the job you also have a lots of time to do in the further. If you do not have any tuition stress, you just keep your hobbies and enjoy your colleague , you also can try to do some part time job if you have a time, hope you will to be a better man!

Not late at all! I have worked in ML and NLP space in Berlin as Product manager and have seen people coming from different backgrounds into it. there are a lot of startups in that space in Berlin and would highly recommend seeking those out = they are usually flexible and even if they do not offer internships - they may find some spot for you to come on board!

Hi Ian,

Congratulations, its great what you are doing!

1. I would try to volunteer and seek internship opportunities (with or without pay ) to gain experience. You just have to get started at some place and figure out the next move from there. Get your hand dirty, do all the work you can, no opportunity is a poor one!

2. You could also enroll yourself for Online courses to add to your skill set, be selective though (Quality over Quantity)

I'm sure you will be able to move forward if you just start acting!

Take care!

Jordan’s Answer

Hi Ian,

Age is just a number, and you are not a late starter by any means.
The most important thing is how much perseverance you have.

In case if you are struggling to find a data science or machine learning internship, feel free to find a junior position (may not be in a related field) in a company that does machine learning or data science. This way, you will have a network and reputation that is useful if you are to be promoted horizontally to your dream job.

Blake’s Answer

Hey Ian,

There is nothing wrong with starting at 27 years old, the important thing is that you're starting! I would recommend first trying to look at your university to see if they have career fairs. If they don't, then I would reach out to local companies in your field to see if they have an internship. Worst comes to worst, you might not get paid for an internship, but at least you gain experience. Experience is key!

Thanks,
Blake
