Omar’s Answer

Hi Zan,

As the medical field is set to expand rapidly in the coming years, management of healthcare organizations are going to seek professional information from consultants in order to optimize their processes and systems, as well as seek advice on a wide variety of topics, from in-patient services to pharmaceuticals, to addressing the needs of a population that is consistently living longer.

According to glassdoor, the average salary of a healthcare consultant is $69k. In order to competently assist managers with their organizations, most healthcare consultants have degrees related to Data Science or Finance/Accounting, and typically have an MBA.

Jerel’s Answer

Hi Zan,

Healthcare consulting is a great choice. I wanted to point out some core consulting skills that will be beneficial for you regardless of what industry you decide to go into.

• Creative thinking – Creative thinking will allow you to share ideas that go beyond the standard and normally accepted ways of approaching the business of the industry. It encourages brainstorming and listening to ideas from all kinds of people.

• Problem-solving – As a consultant, you may be called on to help a client solve a business need and provide additional guidance or expertise. Your ability to listen carefully to the concerns the client presents to you and react quickly and thoughtfully to help propose solutions may be among the most valuable skills you can possess.

• Collaboration with all staff levels – As a consultant, you may interact with clients and stakeholders of all staff levels. It will be useful to have a sense of confidence when working with both clients and stakeholders. Developing poise, politeness, friendliness, excellent listening skills and public speaking skills will serve you well in any circumstance.

• Time management – Time management will also serve you well as a consultant. Good time management will allow you to focus your time and energy on your most important activities, so you can achieve more in less time. Managing your time will help you get clearer, more focused and more productive on your most important activities.

I hope this helps. Best!

Brittney’s Answer

Hi Zan,

I definitely think that healthcare consulting is a great option to pursue as a career! First of all, there is a high demand and shortage of healthcare professionals in general and will provide you with great job security. I work for a public accounting firm, PwC, where we have healthcare consultants that work with various healthcare providers to assess various areas of their organization. From what I've seen at PwC, the healthcare consultants typically travel across the country to serve their various clients and work on multiple engagements throughout the year. It definitely keeps your everyday not 'typical' and there is a ton of variety. Additionally, at PwC there are opportunities to specialize in certain areas so you definitely would have many different options & career paths if you chose to start your career in healthcare consulting.

In terms of next steps, I would search LinkedIn to see the various companies offering healthcare consulting. From what I'm knowledgeable of the Big 4 public accounting firms (PwC, Deloitte, EY, and KPMG) are great initial options where you could get a summer internship or a full time offer upon completion of an undergraduate degree.

Best of luck!
