Hi Trevo,

To become an engineer, you will need to go to college and get your Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or something parallel to it. Some people also like to get their Masters degree in engineering, but that is not necessary for this profession. I would however, recommend you take the time and money to become a Professional Engineer after 5 years of working in the field. This will help certify you and make you become a more valuable asset to whatever company or firm you work for at the time. Becoming a PE usually increases your salary as well.

So to answer your question, 4 years getting your Bachelors, another 2-3 years getting your Masters (if you want), then after 5 years of working, you can apply to take the test to become a PE (Professional Engineer.) All in all, between 4 - 12 years. Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Kristen Blake
