Garrett’s Answer
I come from a family of electricians and worked as an electrician's apprentice through college. Here's my input working as a private contractor on commercial sites:
Favorite:
- I like the problem-solving nature of electrical work. Planning out conduit runs, bending pipe, and wiring up cabinets requires a lot of thinking skills. If you like solving problems and working with your hands, you'll probably like electrical work!
- Electricians also have in-demand skills and typically command respectable salaries. According to Glassdoor.com, *electricians in the U.S. earn an average salary of around $54,000 per year.
Least favorite:
- 10-12 hour work days were pretty common
- Work can be strenuous!
- Getting dirty and grimy depending on the job from crawling around in industrial/construction settings is common
- If you're working on an outdoor job, you can be under the hot sun for hours on end
