Mary C.’s Answer

Your abilities in technology can take you far in many careers, especially when the career involves work that is exciting and satisfying for you. Today, many jobs include leveraging technologies to be more productive (get more done with the same level of effort) and/or get better results even faster than before and to change the world.

Consider what types of jobs truly interest you and realize that many people change their jobs over time as new opportunities present themselves to you. For example, you can start as a programmer who eventually manages the Engineering team and then leads the organization over time - or become a Technical Product Manager, Technical Writer, or Technical Program Leader. All of these roles take advantage of the technologies that enable us to do connect with our customers, connect with each other, and connect with the world.

Your ingredients for success include self-awareness (what am I good at and what excites me about work?) and knowledge about the career (what do I need to be successful in this role?) I have used the steps below to both assess my future career and to assess new job opportunities when they come my way.

Mary C. recommends the following next steps:

Consider the industries that excites you about being a part of them and what role(s) you are drawn to in those industries, i.e. engineer, technical product manager, etc. You can check your local library and online for resources on different career paths and industries - and you may find that they offer some job counseling opportunities for students looking for them as well.
Seek input from leaders in your chosen career(s) on the capabilities and experience that are needed to be successful in these career options; these can be people you reach out to, leaders in your current school or work situation, and leaders who've been interviewd about their success stories (online research, library, etc). Your goal is to find out what they think makes anyone successful in your intended job(s).
Now that you have learned about the requirements for your intended career(s), you need to assess your own strengths against these needs - where do you need training, more experience, and improvement in your current skills to be a good candidate? Get input too from trusted sources, i.e. parents, school teachers or counselors, and managers at work.
Now you have a "development roadmap" of the things that you need to do to become a better candidate for the job(s) you are after. In addition, you have educated yourself on both what that career will offer - and what you can bring to that career!

Loving to problem solve is so critical to working in technology! With your current experience in HTML5, consider learning Javascript and React next, to make some dynamic websites. It's good to get a variety of experience on a bunch of things, then go really deep into a a few specific areas to really become an expert.

Don't forget technology is also about people, so talking to those around you and hearing what sort of problems and frustrations they have can inspire you to build things that are really useful. It helps with motivation to keep going when you make things that other people use and get excited about, in addition to things that interest you!

If your going to go into technology my best advice is to try different classes. Try networking, coding, computer science, engineering. Find which one you enjoy the most then get with a teacher and professional to see what career path you want to take. Technology has so many fields and different skill sets for each field that before you just go in to figure what skill sets you need you find out what you want to get involved with. Especially already being certified and the way everything is going learning more with HTML and implementing automation into your website will make you very successful.
