Nancy’s Answer

Deyavie,

According to U. S. News & World Report Rankings of graduate programs, the University of Florida at Gainesville has a top 50 graduate school in psychology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for mental health specialists is growing much faster than average. Part of this is due to substance abuse being a major concern in Florida and every state.

You can prepare for a psychology career at almost any college. It may be called social sciences/social services at community college. From there you will need a bachelor’s degree in psychology, or a related field such as child development, for most entry-level jobs. To be a psychotherapist or family therapist you will need a master’s degree in social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, or psychology in most states. Each state has its own rules for professionals to practice as psychotherapists. Learn what they are in your state online. For research in psychology, you need at least a master’s degree and preferably a doctoral degree, though research assistants may have a bachelor’s degree.

I chose a master’s degree in mental health counseling to work in the field.

There is a lot of opportunity, good luck!

Search online at the State of Florida website to find out what are the state licensing requirements for psychologists , social workers, and counselors.
